We thought Bilawal Bhutto’s first speech in the National Assembly, which is now being called a historic one on his part, calls for a bit of retrospection. Is it something in the Bhutto genes? Were PPP leaders before him just as charismatic, direct, and unafraid? Here are 3 speeches from the Bhutto timeline that should be cataloged as emulating all of these characteristics, and more:

1) “Yeh Qaum Dunya Ka Loha Banay Gi”

Aaj Bhi Bhutto Zinda Hai, Kal Bhi Bhutto Zinda Tha – Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s legacy is remembered by not just PPP supporters but by all. Understandable, as no one can argue the man did not know how to rouse a crowd. He was the kind of leader that people just had to sit up and take notice of, even when they didn’t want to.

2) “Yeh Dharti Aap Ko Pukaar Rahi Hai, Mujhe Pukaar Rahi Hai”

Benazir Bhutto, the first female prime minister not only Pakistan but the entire Muslim community worldwide had ever seen, was no less passionate than her father. Part of what endeared her to people then was this exactly – the fact that they recognized ZA Bhutto’s spirit in Benazir. She spoke out strongly against military dictatorship and wasn’t afraid to call out people she thought were liars and bigots.

3) “We Lose Lives We Never Get Back, the Dead Never Get Justice, And the Survivors Never Get Answers”

It seems Bilawal Bhutto inherited that ‘hitting the nail on the head’ quality demonstrated by his mother and grandfather. But there was one thing they did not have which he exercised with abundance – finesse. Smoothly, without any stutter or hesitance, we imagine he managed to make every person in that room feel equal parts chastised, empowered, and praised yet insulted.

Looks like the PPP still has it. The determination displayed by Bilawal Bhutto tells us this is one party that will fiercely guard its position at the forefront during the upcoming months – if not for the sake of its own supremacy, then to make sure someone is quoting Khan’s promises back to him.
