“Congratulations Rt. Hon. Boris Johnson MP on your election as Conservative Party Leader & on assuming PM’s Office,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said in a message from his official Twitter account.

The prime minister said he looked forward to working with Johnson, and hoped his election would help bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

“I am confident that under your leadership not only the UK & its people will prosper but our bilateral relations will also flourish. I look forward to working with you,” he added in his tweet. The Pakistani prime minister is known to enjoy a good personal relationship with Johnson, who was photographed taking selfies with Khan during his visit to Pakistan in 2016.

A former London mayor and figurehead of the 2016 Brexit campaign, Johnson formally replaced Theresa May and took over as Britain’s prime minister on Wednesday, a day after winning the leadership of the Conservative party.
