An Indonesian man who worked with an organisation to help draft extreme adultery laws received a public whipping after being caught having an affair with a married woman
The man, Mukhlis bin Muhammad, was flogged 28 times while the woman he had an affair with was caned 23 times. The couple were caught by police officials in September, allegedly in a car near a tourist beach.
Mukhlis previously worked for the Aceh Ulema Council, and was an Islamic religious leader according to a private news source– making him the first religious leader to receive public caning since 2005, when the Sharia law came into order in the Aceh region.
This region is known to be deeply conservative, and the only place in Indonesia where the Sharia law is practiced.
