Protesters this week were spotted holding the Taliban flag at Maulana Fazlur Rehmans Azadi March this week.
Government officials were quick to criticise this move. The special assistant to the Prime Minister on youth affairs, Usman Dar, made a statement regarding the controversy on twitter. His main concern was over Pakistan being barred from the FATF.
He further claimed that marchers holding the Taliban flag were an indication of the JUI-F supporting the Taliban, thereby casting doubt on the PPP and PML-N’s support for the march.
As a result of this, those heading the march were quick to announce that the march is a joint effort of the various opposition parties. Subsequently, bringing any flag that isn’t of those parties was prohibited.
Moreover, any person disregarding this would have their flag confiscated.
