The popular actress has been appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency after visiting Afghan refugees in Peshawar last year
The star shared the news on Twitter yesterday, tweeting a video compiled by UNHCR that showed Mahira participating in activities with refugees and saying, “grateful and honoured to be a Goodwill UNHCR Ambassador for Pakistan”.
Mahira has spoken up about the needs of more than 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan in many interviews, and supports her country’s role in sheltering refugees. In the video and her tweet, Mahira highlighted how Pakistan has hosted refugees for over 40 years. As a newly-appointed Goodwill ambassador, Mahira said the refugee situation is something she feels strongly about and will be vocal on.
Mahira previously hit a record of having the most followers on Instagram as a Pakistani celebrity.
