On Monday, Finance Advisor Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh defended the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) calling for increased awareness about the billion dollar programme.

At a recent conference, he was asked to respond to statements made by US Assistant Secretary Alice Wells where she warned Pakistan that it’s debt problem would worsen due to CPEC.

In response, he emphasised the importance of the CPEC programme and explained that it contained a number of projects to help development in Pakistan including initiatives for improvements in road networks, modernisation of railway infrastructure and the setting up of special economic zones to attract foreign interest in investment.

He further added that government should inform people about the benefits of CPEC because the true success from the programme will only happen once foreign investors participate.
