On the final day of the three day long AdAsia 2019, the sister of Mark Zuckerberg, Randi Zuckerberg gave a speech about her experience in Pakistan citing the country’s treatment of it’s women “honourable”.

During the hour long lecture, Zuckerberg cited famous Pakistani women such as Malala Yousafzai and Benazir Bhutto and said that the fact that Pakistan has produced such women is testament to the country’s honourable treatment of it’s women.

She further expressed her surprise at finding out that Pakistan is the preferred supplier of quality soccer balls to the world and said that due to this, Pakistan is known in all soccer playing countries. She also spoke about her love for the sport of cricket, which is incredibly popular in Pakistan. After praising the nation, she began to tell her own life story.

Zuckerberg said that while growing up, she was extremely passionate about singing and would have even gone as far as to pursue it as a discipline had her parents not not discouraged her from doing so. Instead, she continued her further studies at her brother’s alma mater, Harvard University, and jokingly pointed out that while she finished her degree, her brother dropped out. After her graduation, she moved from California to New York to work at a advertisement agency.

While working on the east coast, her brother insisted for her to return to California and join him in Silicon Valley at the Facebook headquarters. He said the the team needed her help with marketing, however, as this job was unpaid and she was expected to work with family, she declined his offer. She still went to California to visit her family and intended to stay there for a week when she saw a group of youngsters locked in a room all day and night working on the idea of connecting people. She was moved by their dedication and passion. After watching them, she ended up extending her one week long trip to 10 years.

Randi explained, “When we started, we were a 12-member team. Today, Facebook has 102 offices with thousands of employees.

“As the chief marketing officer of Facebook, my budget was nothing. You have to work on passion project, exploring it day and night.”

She explained how because her passion was music, she launched a live Facebook band. At the time of the launch the band only had two viewers, her parents. However, a week after it’s launch she received a call from a famous singer asking to be featured on Facebook live. Randi describes how she thought it was a joke initially. When that turned out not to be the case and the performance took place, it massively helped launch the platform and opened the door for many other celebrities to appear on Facebook live thus helping grow it’s popularity. Within four months of it’s launch, then President Barak Obama helped boost it’s popularity by expressing his desire to want to use it to connect with people. Zuckerberg proudly explained how today, the site is used by 2.5 billion people in the world.

Despite it’s success, Randi ended up leaving Facebook. Many wondered why she chose to leave the company to which she cited her complicated relationship with Facebook and being the only women in the Silicon Valley setup. Instead, she wanted to do something for women.
