A Pakistani-American journalist by the name of Amna Nawaz has been selected to moderate a US presidential debate. This marks the first time a South Asian women will be moderating a US presidential debate.

Amna Nawaz is a senior correspondent for the Public Broadcasting Service news programme “NewsHour”. She will be moderating the debate alongside a panel including PBS anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff, colleague NewsHour White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor and “Politico” chief political correspondent Tim Alberta. They will be moderating the sixth Democratic primary debate taking place at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California on December 19th.

Nawaz hails from a media background; her father, Shuja Nawaz, was a Pakistan Television (PTV) journalist and is now is a Distinguished Fellow at the South Asia Centre Atlantic Centre Think Tank in Washington DC.

Nawaz has been working with PBS since April 2018 and is not only its senior correspondent, but also its primary substitute anchor.

Before her position with PBS, Nawaz worked with ABC News where she was the anchor for breaking news coverage and played a major role in network’s digital coverage of the 2016 presidential elections. Prior to that, she worked as a foreign correspondent at NBC News, a job which required her to report from various crisis-ridden regions such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Syria.

Nawaz is also the founder and former managing editor of NBC’s Asian-America platform which was created with the goal of wanting to raise the voices of American’s fastest-growing population.

At her position with “NewsHour”, Nawaz reports on politics, foreign affairs, education, climate change, culture and sports.

While she was working with NBC News her work would oftentimes frequent on NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, Dateline NBC, MSNBC and MSNBC.com.

For several years, she worked as NBC’s Islamabad Bureau Chief and Correspondent and was also the first foreign journalist granted entrance into North Waziristan. She covered a series of major historical events including the Taliban attack on Malala Yousafzai, the US raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound and has covered a series of reports on the impact of US drone strikes.
