GulAhmed, a well established clothing brand has plagiarised the work of Shehzil Malik, a Lahore based illustrator known for art that tackles several social issues.
Recently Shehzil Malik discovered that GulAhmed had plagiarised her work which comprises of bright colours, intricate designs with South Asian affectations and highlights social issues.
The clothing brand Gul Ahmed is selling her designs under the tag of “Desi Pop”.
Why is this a problem?
This is a problem because a) it’s plagiarism and that’s just wrong on so many levels and b) not only is Gul Ahmed undervaluing the creative process, they’re doing so when they could have actually paid for her to illustrate designs for their collection. Shehzil has already worked for major brands like Generation in the past.
