An applicant had filed a plea with the Sindh High Court to overrule the government’s ban on congregational prayers. The ban was put into place in view of social distancing – to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“The executive is using its powers to ensure the safety of human life,” the bench said while discarding the application.

As of 17 April, there are 7,027 confirmed Covid-19 in Pakistan, with 134 deaths and 1,765 recoveries. Just two days after the government’s announcement of relaxing the lockdown, a record number of 23 deaths and staggering 627 cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours alone.
