Researchers are hopeful about the test drug remdesivir after it has been used to treat monkeys in a trial run.
Covid-19 infected monkeys were able to recover from the virus after being treated with the experimental drug. The monkeys experienced changes within just 12 hours of taking the drug.
Towards the end of the testing period, just one of the six treated animals showed some difficulty in breathing, while all untreated animals had difficulty breathing. The treated monkeys also had lower levels of the virus in their lungs.
More trials to follow
Remdesivir is one of the first drugs that has potential to treat the coronavirus. Clinical trials are already underway with human patients.
It was reported on Thursday that remdesivir had also been effective on coronavirus patients in Chicago who are participating in the human trials for the vaccine.
