According to research, high levels of air pollution are one of the main reasons behind deaths from Covid-19.

The study analysed the trend of coronavirus deaths in 66 countries including the ones which have been worst-hit by the virus.

The research was targeted towards observing nitrogen dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Researchers found that 78% of the 4,443 deaths were in regions that had the worst combination of nitrogen dioxide levels and airflow conditions which trapped polluted air.

Nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant which is primarily produced by diesel vehicles. Many studies prior to this one have linked health damage to the exposure of this gas, particularly lung disease. Since Covid-19 also targets the respiratory system, high levels of exposure to nitrogen dioxide could make an infected person more vulnerable.

Although lockdowns worldwide have considerably reduced air pollution, prolonged exposure to such toxic chemicals before infection could prove to be fatal.
