Twitter handle of the Walled City of Lahore Authority, recently released some pictures of guards patroling in a local market of Walled Lahore, attired in the traditional kotwal uniform.

Kotwal, which translates to “leader of the fort” was a title used in medieval India, had the mandate to control the fort of a major town or a small town on behalf of the ruler. Kotwal had its function similar to Zaildar during British rule in Hindustan. In ancient times, Kotwal was used for Cheif of police.

The response: While the Walled City Lahore Authority took an initiative to bring old culture back, netizens are not so pleased with the idea.
