What happened:

The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has ordered Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab to repair four lakes in the city’s PECHS region.

Details:

Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed said he used to go fishing there in his childhood. Two of the lakes were located near the famous Jheel Park, according to the court, which was hearing complaints against encroachments in Karachi on Wednesday. Amber Alibhai of Shehri, an environmental NGO, said the lands of 54 parks have been encroached upon. Some of them have been turned to garbage dumps. She further told the court that four lakes in the PECHS region had been filled with sand. The property had been distributed to private individuals. On the grounds of a park close to Jheel Park, shops have been built unlawfully.

What else:

The region has been “commercialised,” according to the administrator. The local administration has repaired a public park in one corner of Jheel Park and planted trees in another, according to Wahab, who also mentioned that a football facility is nearby. The lakes have dried out before being repurposed, according to the Sindh Advocate General.
