‘Uvariopsis dicaprio’ British researchers named a newly-discovered tree after Hollywood actor, Leonardo DiCaprio
On Jan 6, scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom said they wished to pay tribute to Hollywood actor, Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in saving rain forests and announced to name a newly-discovered tree after him, calling it “Uvariopsis dicaprio,” which can only be found in the Cameroon forest and is known for its ‘extraordinary’ biodiversity.
When British rain forest scientists and activists learned how the government plans to open broad swaths of the Ebo Forest to logging, they were outraged. They submitted a letter to the officials, outlining the endangered animal and plant species which DiCaprio took notice of, his tweets regarding the matter reached millions of his fans, boosting the campaign’s popularity. Uvariopsis dicaprio is the first botanical discovery of 2022, the highly endangered species is made of glossy yellow blossoms, sprouting from its trunk and is a member of the ‘ylang ylang’ family which can only be found in a limited section of the forest.
