‘Murree to get district status and grieving families will be granted Rs17.6 million,’ says Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar
During a visit on Jan 9 to the affected areas, Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar announced that Murree would be given the status of a district, with senior officers stationed there to ensure better administrative management and promised Rs17.6 million in financial aid for the victims’ families.
CM Buzdar expressed his concern over the entry of more vehicles into the afflicted area than its maximum capacity. In light of the inquiry report, he made it clear that individuals guilty of negligence will face consequences. He also approved the construction of two new police stations in Sunny Bank and Jhika Gali, as well as two new parking plazas as well as promised to take action against hotels who were overcharging.
CM Buzdar also formed a five-member investigative committee to probe the causes and lapses that resulted in the deaths of the Murree tragedy victims. According to the body’s terms of references, the team would investigate whether relevant departments developed a common plan of action to avoid a crisis or not, after severe weather warnings were issued. It will also look into the location of snow removal equipment, vehicle lifters, and snowmobiles at key locations, and look into emergency services like Rescue 1122 and hospitals’ efficiency at the time.
