51 retired teachers, staffers are illegally living in Karachi University: reports

What happened: According to a list released by the KU estate office, 51 retired academics and officers are illegally staying in the University of Karachi despite obtaining eviction warnings. Details: Some instructors and officers have rented out their homes, while others have handed them to family members. The unauthorised tenants include retired professors, librarians, lab assistants, directors, and other former officers. These houses are supposed to serve academics and staff members, which implies retired staff members must evict them upon request. Why it matters: Prof Dr Shah Ali Ul Qader, President of the Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS), claimed the occupants were illegally occupying houses ranging in size from 400 to 1,000 square yards. The minimum monthly rent for these plots is around Rs50,000. The residents’ monthly loss to the KU account is approximately Rs 2.5 million. What’s next: Prof. Qader stated that once the notice time had expired, the institution will appoint an inquiry officer and a legal team to investigate the situation.
