More than 80 farmers have been arrested across India for crop burning, which releases pollutants that lend to the smog that’s currently choking cities The post-harvest crop burning combined with car and factory emissions has resulted in each winter being accompanied by toxic smog, which has made India’s capital, New Delhi, the most polluted capital in the world. The Indian High Court therefore ordered officials to crackdown on this illegal activity this week, however fires continued across Punjab and Haryana, mostly taking place at night in order to avoid detection. According to a Punjab police officer, more than 17,000 farm fires in India have been started in just the last 3 days. Authorities also say that more than 48,000 farm fires have been reported in the two states since late September.
