Zakir Naik Apologizes for Remarks on PIA During Pakistan Visit

What Happened: Dr. Zakir Naik apologized for his remarks about PIA during his visit to Pakistan, emphasizing peace, while a journalist revealed he actually traveled via Qatar Airways.

What you need to know: Islamic preacher Dr. Zakir Naik has apologized for remarks he made about Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) during his current visit to the country. At a recent event, Naik acknowledged the discomfort his comments caused, explaining that his intention was to promote peace between India and Pakistan.

What more: He shared a conversation with Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, who urged him to move past the incident with Pakistan’s national airline. Naik reflected on the criticism he received on social media and expressed regret for any division his words may have caused, stating that he aims to unite, not divide, Indian and Pakistani people.

Also: Dr. Naik, wanted in India on charges of terror funding, money laundering, and hate speech, had earlier expressed disappointment with PIA for offering only a 50% discount on excess baggage fees during his trip to Pakistan. He noted that as a state guest, he was hurt by the airline’s lack of accommodation and compared it to his experiences in India, where he said he was allowed more excess baggage without charge.

Also: In his apology, Naik reiterated his dedication to peace and emphasized that his ultimate goal is spiritual, not material. However, journalist Umer Cheema revealed that Naik didn’t even fly PIA, as he traveled to Pakistan via Qatar Airways, stopping in Doha for four hours before landing in Islamabad. This marks Naik’s first visit to Pakistan in 30 years since he last visited in 1992 to meet with scholar Dr. Israr Ahmed in Lahore.
