An educationist’s review of Pakistan’s science books highlights that there is no coherence between the Waqfiyat-i-Aama (WA) science books 1-3 and the Single National Curriculum (SNC) science books 4-5. Chapters in Book 4 jump from plants to animals and then plants again without clear flow of ecosystem or energy. The term “energy” itself is only mentioned once combined in both Books 4 and 5 without any clear definition or concept. The human body’s skeletal system is labelled too simply, almost incorrectly. The humerus, backbone, and the femur are labelled as “bone of arm”, “bone of spine”, “bone of leg”. This kind of labeling means students will not be aware of the correct names of the bones. The “tundra” ecosystem is labelled as a “snow region” which is incorrect because the tundra does not necessarily have snowy regions. The “Interesting Information” box provided throughout the books almost consistently gives incorrect information. The number of muscles in the human body are over 650 but the book says there are 600 muscles. Sahara is also termed as the world’s largest desert in the book, whereas Sahara is the largest “hot” desert and Antarctica is the largest desert of the world. The chapter on “cells” is highly deficient in information. Students are left un-informed about size, structure or function of the organelles of a cell. Information that has nothing to do with scientific facts and knowledge is given, such as mentioning the Islamabad Aviary. Mentioning the aviary was not necessary and most importantly the objective of such information should have been create awareness on the topic of animal captivity. The content in the SNC science books seems to be anything but scientific as per the educationist. Click here to see more from Propergaanda.
