What happened : A proposal was made by Sindh health minister, Dr Azra Pechuho, to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to help meet the ongoing challenges of vaccination for coronavirus prevention in the province, and she asked the international body to help the local bodies in this process from the procurement of the vaccines to their storage and from cold-chain management to their distribution. As the province recorded the highest number of coronavirus patients alongside the highest number of fatalities across the country, the need for a vaccine is obvious. Despite ongoing trials of the CanSino vaccine in Agha Khan Hospital and The Indus Hospital, the surge in corona cases has forced the Sindh government to directly seek help from the World Health Organization. The health minister said the support of a body like WHO was crucial to make the Covid-19 vaccines available to people who cannot afford it. “We need WHO’s assistance in its procurement, storage, cold-chain management and distribution so that we could vaccinate our elderly people, who have comorbidities [and] can’t afford it. We don’t want anyone to be missed”, said the health minister. The background : The WHO donated several vehicles for monitoring activities, refurbished nine vaccination centres in the city and provided a 500kV generator for uninterrupted power supply to the EPI for maintaining the cold chain for the storage of important vaccines in the EPI programme.
