What happened: On March 24, Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan’s chairman, Saad Hussain Rizvi delivered speech at the University of Karachi’s Arts Auditorium and Twitterati is questioning why politicians are visiting campuses, while some criticized that an ‘extremist’ personality shouldn’t be addressing at an educational institution. Click here to see the tweets, criticizing while one of them praised the politician. Back story: The TLP launched a nationwide protest in October 2021, requesting for the French ambassador to be expelled for offensive remarks made by the French government about blasphemous caricatures of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The rallies quickly became violent, and Saad Rizvi’s detention sparked huge riots across the country on multiple occasions. What happened next: Saad Rizvi was released from prison in November 2021 after his name was removed from the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997’s Fourth Schedule. Initially, he was detained by the Punjab authorities for allegedly disrupting public order. Twitterati reacts: Criminology Assistant Professor, Zoha Waseem wrote how Saad Rizvi addressed workers in university premises while Ali Wazir has been in custody for more than 15 months for ‘merely’ speaking against the state. While some users said that TLP ‘goons’ shouldn’t be allowed in educational institutions as Farhan (twt/OhMyFarhan) wrote, “Such fanatic leaders should not be allowed to deliver speeches in universities.” Other hailed the leader too as KHR (twt/ r0i2zvi) tweeted: “Great…….. He’s young, talented and energetic Man… should be supported and promoted for the sake of better leadership”
