Formation of a medical board to determine Zahir Jaffer’s mental stability again put on hold by Islamabad High Court

What happened: On Jan 5, a sessions court in Islamabad reserved its decision on an application filed by Zahir Jaffer’s legal team which seeks the formation of a medical board to examine his mental health. Details: On Dec 1, Zahir Jaffer’s attorney, Sikander Zulqarnain submitted a motion to establish a medical board to examine the culprit’s mental state. Advocate Shah Khawar, who represents Noor Mukadam’s family, filed a written response to the defendant’s plea, asking for court’s rejection on it. As public prosecutor, Hasan Abbas opposed the request as well, he further added that Zahir used to counsel students at a local school. Justifying his claim, Zulqarnain argued that the request for a medical board was only made after observing his client’s behaviour during the trial where Zahir hurled obscenities at the judge and was disruptive during proceedings. The court deferred its decision on the formation of a medical board and adjourned the case until Jan 15. What else: The court also unsealed the DVD containing Noor Mukadam’s CCTV footage and escorted media and lawyers who were not involved, out of the courtroom. Meanwhile, Zahir’s counsel cross-examined computer operator, Mudassir and inquired about the length of the CCTV footage and the memory capacity of the DVR on which the clip was recorded. Plaintiff, Shaukat Mukadam’s statement was delayed once again and will be recorded on the next hearing.
