Image source: Dawn What happened: The only voice for Millenials, ProperGaanda, has been deprived of their right to report the factual things happening in the nation. The millennial-run digital platform has once again been subjected to the harsh rules of this hybrid regime, led by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The digital news platform has always given a voice to the issues faced by the younger generation of this society. Freedom of Speech has been a concerning question in this regime. With journalists continuously being attacked by ‘unknown people,’ Instagram users have tried to shut down another voice that was doing their best to do factual reporting and raise the voice of the oppressed community in Pakistan. What you need to know: It is pertinent to note not more than a month ago, SACM Hasaan Khawar had conducted a press briefing stating, “We will make social media companies independent, and the government will provide every possible support that is required.” However, the government’s claims of tolerance for freedom of speech seem to have gone astray, as ProperGaanda has been deprived of its fundamental right. Why it matters: More importantly, article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom of speech and expression and freedom of the press with only certain restrictions. At the same time, the freedom of the press in Pakistan is legally protected by the law of Pakistan as stated in its constitution. However, since independence, the press of Pakistan has been subjected to numerous restrictions, especially during the dictator’s regime. Still, the current administration is proving to follow those footsteps set by the dictators.
