Pakistan Media Development Authority disbanded; PMLN terms it “black law”

What happened:

On April 19, the Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the disbanding of the Digital Media Wing and said, “Zero tolerance for baseless criticism of institutions, journalists.” In her press conference, Mariyum said, “An attempt was being made to gag an already muzzled media. But now, whatever shape and form PMDA is working in, we have announced to disband it.”

Further, the Information Minister said that the coalition government would not allow the curbing of freedom of expression, “The coalition government would not allow the imposition of curbs and this PMDA is a black law.” She also conveyed that, “The IHC had termed the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act Amendment Ordinance unconstitutional due to the efforts of journalists and PML-N as well.”

 However, Mariyum Aurangzeb claimed, “We will review this PECA law and take all stakeholders on board in this regard. We will also identify the gaps which are there and were used to muzzle the media.”
