What happened:

On May 24, Karachi police detained 18 people, including professor Nida Kirmani, for protesting against the enforced disappearances of Baloch community members in the city.

Details:

According to South Senior Superintendent of Police Asad Raza (Raza), the activists announced a rally from the Karachi Press Club to the Sindh Chief Minister House. He went on to say that female police officers ordered the demonstrators to disperse since the home department had issued a ban on such gatherings.

SSP Raza stated that the police was forced to intervene due to the presence of international cricketers in the area as the Sri Lanka women’s cricket team is currently in Karachi for a three-match Twenty20 series.

Who was arrested:

SSP Raza stated that the 18 people (10 men and eight women) including Kirmani were arrested and taken to the Artillery Maidan police station after attempting to approach further. He went on to say that they were later released.

What you need to know:

Kirmani also stated that she and others were released because no charges were filed against them, and their smartphones were returned. ” But information was recorded about everyone, and images were taken of the Baloch males who were with us,” she claimed.
