PTA Confirms X (Twitter) Still Blocked in Pakistan

What Happened: PTA clarifies that X (formerly Twitter) remains inaccessible in Pakistan despite recent legal updates and previous court orders.

What you need to know: On Thursday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) clarified the status of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, for users in Pakistan. The PTA confirmed that X’s services are still not available to users in the country.

What more: Ahead of the general elections on February 8, several social media sites, including X, were inaccessible, which authorities attributed to a technical error. On the election day, the internet was completely shut down to prevent potential terrorism, according to the caretaker government. After the elections, there were continued issues with accessing X.

Also: Earlier in the day, PTA’s lawyer Ahsan Imam informed the court that the PTA had withdrawn its notification about suspending X services in Pakistan. This update came in response to the Sindh High Court’s request for the PTA’s position on the X ban. Following the lawyer’s statement, the court postponed the hearing for two weeks.

Additionally: Previously, on April 17, the Sindh High Court had ordered the Ministry of Interior to lift its suspension of Twitter within one week.
