What happened: On March 21,The Friday Times reported that Pooja Oad, an 18-year-old Hindu girl, was reportedly shot dead after a failed kidnapping attempt in Rohi, Sukkur. The girl was alleged to have been shot in the middle of the street after resisting the attackers, according to Sindhi media. Reportedly the perpetrators included 5 men from the Lashari community. Details: While there are pictures of the deceased’s body and video of her mother and sibling crying posted on Twitter , ANI News wrote, “Women belonging to minority communities are regularly abducted and forcibly converted.” What you need to know: Between 2013 and 2019, 156 incidences of forced conversions were reported by the Peoples Commission for Minorities’ Rights and the Center for Social Justice. For the second time in 2019, the Sindh government attempted to criminalise forced conversions and marriages, but religious protestors challenged the bill, claiming that these females are not forced to convert but do so because they fall in love with Muslim men, and the law was rejected.
