FBR directed custom officials to seize only ‘commercial quantities’ of imported goods

What happened: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) took note of the taking of ‘luxury products’ in small amounts from the luggage of passengers arriving at the country’s airports on Wednesday and issued new guidelines in this regard. Details: The authority claimed in a statement sent to Chief Collectors of Customs in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, and Lahore that the government had issued a list of luxury commodities under SRO No 598, prohibiting them till further orders. However, the board has learned that field formations, particularly relevant officials, have begun to seize products in tiny amounts, including culinary items, causing inconvenience to travellers, it noted. What happened next: The FBR directed the authorities to seize only commercial quantities of the aforementioned commodities and to assist passengers in accordance with previous practice. The statement stated unequivocally that any breach of the new directives will result in harsh action against individuals involved.
