What happened: An Afghan infant named Sohail Ahmadi who got separated from his parents during the Kabul evacuation in Aug, 2021 was found and returned to his family by a 29 year-old taxi driver on Jan 8. Back story: In Aug, 2021, the when Taliban took over Afghanistan, the infant was passed over a fence to an American soldier in order to protect him from getting crushed as thousands pressed their way into Kabul airport. Sohail, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found once his family had entered. After a frantic search for his boy, Mirza Ali Ahmadi, Sohail’s father who served as a security guard for the US embassy, was sent on an evacuation aircraft to the United States with his wife, Suraya and four other children. Sohail’s return: After reading a Reuters report about the family’s quest for their son, Sohail was tracked down in Nov, 2021 in Hamid Safi’s home, a 29-year-old cab driver. According to the news agency, Safi found Sohail alone and crying on the Kabul airport’s ground. After failing to locate the boy’s family, he decided to adopt and raise him as Mohammed Abed with his wife and children. The settlement: When Sohail’s location was discovered, his grandpa, Mohammad Qasem Razawi, traveled to Kabul to request for the kid to be returned to his biological family. At first, Mr Safi refused to hand over the kid and requested for his family’s transfer to the United States. However, Taliban arranged a settlement between the two families, and after seven weeks of negotiations and Mr Safi’s brief detention, Sohail was handed over to his grandpa on Jan 8.
