
What happened: What happened: Punjab Education Minister, Dr Murad Raas announced the new dress code for schools in Punjab at a press conference on Jan 17, “The boys who will be reciting the Holy Quran would wear caps.” At the same time, the minister urged the private educational institutions to provide scarves for the girls who will be reciting the Holy Quran as part of the syllabus. He added, “The educational institutions will provide scarves for girls and caps for boy students reciting Holy Quran.” Details: The government has directed both, public and private schools in Punjab, to follow the new dress code for male and female students, terming it as ‘effective immediately.’ Raas stated that if a school breaches this conduct, legal action will be taken against its management. He further added that the Holy Quran is now being taught in educational institutions across the province for the first time, “Naazra (Quran reading) is taught to students in grades 1 to 5, whereas Tafseer is taught to students in grades 6 to 12. (Quran explanation),” Raas claimed. Previously: In Dec 2021, male students were prohibited from wearing shorts, cut-off jeans, and trousers at the University of Agriculture, Toba Tek Singh sub-campus, Faisalabad while female students were barred from wearing t-shirts, jeans, sleeveless shirts, see-through, and skin tight skirts.
