1. Lahore High Court termed BZU order to suspend the admission of a student belonging to the Ahmadi community as “Persecution”
What happened: The Lahore High Court in October termed Bahauddin Zakariya University’s order to suspend the admission of a student belonging to the Ahmadi community as “persecution.” As Usman Taimur Tahir’s admission was suspended by the university without prior notice. Subsequently, the student filed a petition in the LHC challenging the university’s move. However, Justice Muhammad Shan Gul of the LHC noted that Usman’s suspension “amounts to persecuting the already persecuted and this was a conscious disregard for minority rights.” 2. Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmad again proposed the name of Justice Ayesha Malik as a judge at the SC
What happened: Lahore High Court’s Judge Ayesha Malik’s name was again proposed for the apex court by the CJP Gulzar Ahmed. This for the 2nd time this year that Chief Justice Pakistan proposed Ayesha Malik’s name. Earlier in September, her name was proposed but the members were unable to elect her in the Supreme Court. If she is elevated to the apex court then she would work as the Supreme Court judge till 2031 and would also become the Chief Justice of Pakistan in January 2030 after Justice Yahya Afridi’s retirement. 3. Sindh High Court ordered NADRA to issue CNIC to the children who a single parent raised
What happened: In November, the Sindh High Court allowed NADRA to issue the CNIC to the children who were raised by a single parent. This was considered as a “Landmark ruling” by the SHC allowing orphans to get their CNICs. In this instance, if a father or mother leaves a child after birth then the child can easily get the CNICs and open doors for their jobs in the public sector. 4. Anti-terrorism court sentenced 3 to 2 years of jail time for the accused in vandalising Gurdwara Nankana Sahib
What happened: Earlier in January 2021, an Anti-terrorism court in Pakistan handed two years jail term to the prime accused Imran Chishti and two other accused Salman and Ahmed for six months in jail for vandalising the Gurdwara Nankana Sahib in 2020. Gurdwara Nankana Sahib was vandalised by three men as they pelted stones and threatened to destroy the worship place. 5. Chief Justice Pakistan ordered the culprits to pay for the reconstruction of the vandalised Hindu temple in Rahim Yar Khan
What happened: In September 2021, mob violence took place in Rahim Yar Khan’s Hindu temple and CJP was quick to take action and ordered the local police to arrest the involved while the accused were ordered to pay for the reconstruction of the Hindu temple in Bhong village. Subsequently, the Chief Justice of Pakistan called upon the Punjab police chief and ordered him to protect the religious worship places of the minorities.
