“Rise in Islamophobic crimes in Germany”: 30 tombstones demolished by hooligans in the country

What happened: On January 1, the German media reported that a Muslim cemetery in Germany’s northwestern city was vandalised. The local authorities of Iserlohn have also issued a statement and appealed to the citizens for information on the vandalism. Turkey’s foreign ministry in Germany issued a statement quoted by Tribune,  “A new indicator of sick Islamophobic mentality has been on the rise especially in Europe and even targets Muslim cemeteries.” Details: At the same time, the Turkish foreign ministry has also urged the authorities to arrest the vandals. The German police stated,  “Nearly 30 headstones were vandalised.”  Whereas, the authorities have also asked for information from the people who witnessed the vandalism. On the other hand, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Turks Abroad held a commemoration program on January 3 at the cemetery.  Also: Zafer Sirakaya, the Chairman, in his speech during the commemoration program, said,  “More effective measures should be taken as civil society and politics in the upcoming period in order to put an end to such attacks.”  In 2020, Germany’s official figures of hate crimes against the Muslim community were above 900 and closed to 80 mosques were attacked.
