This online furniture store is paying its karigars above minimum wage AND creating pretty cool stuff

Whether you bought a new home or are just planning to redecorate your living space, the right kind of furniture is the one thing that instantly elevates the look. Unfortunately, in Pakistan furniture shopping means going from one karigar shop to another and looking at the same two designs everywhere. Wouldn’t it be great if someone thought of revolutionising this boring way of shopping? Look no further, Bosk Designs ( @bosk.design ) is a local online furniture shop that does the hard work for you while taking extra care of the karigars that work from them.

Bosk Designs’ aim is to create dynamic furniture that speaks to an individual’s personal style. This includes designs that refer to minimalistic and urban decor. They also provide an opportunity to fully customise their furniture any way you like. Along with the preferences, they provide ease and comfort. What sets them apart is their designs. Their products are modern while staying true to a mid-century style. You’d be delighted to see cane, rattan and other traditional materials being used in their furniture. However, the designs and colours follow the designer’s imaginations and are not married to a specific aesthetic. Speaking of colours, their palette ranges from neutrals to shades.  “We’re always on the lookout for the designs that speak to us as individuals that value aesthetics and comfort side by side”, says Hussain Tahir, Founder of Bosk Designs.

Currently, they have stools and benches in a bunch of styles and materials but they are hoping to add more designs for chairs, coffee tables and eventually unique side tables and other smaller pieces of furniture.  Their recently launched chair embodies traditional styles with its use of cane for the weaving on the back but its simplistic use of light colours for the cushion is meant to connect the past and present.

Customers don’t have to worry about the designs because there’s a lot of brainstorming that goes behind each product at Bosk Designs. The process’s simple yet extra attention goes into each step. First, they look at different products available in different parts of the world, so the product they launch is relevant to the latest trends. Next, they try to experiment with the chosen designs in terms of mixing and matching certain elements of the designs that add a personal touch to the products. These are then taken to the local workshops where the feasibility of turning imagination into reality is discussed. Finally, the workers work their magic according to their expertise.

The best thing about Bosk Designs is their ethics. Most of their products are outsourced to local workers that work on a wage. They look out for these underappreciated workers by paying them a higher wage than the market rates. The products are hand made with a lot of care and hard work on the karigar’s part.  “We treat them as well as we can with the resources available to us as a start-up, and we hope to reward everyone involved more as the business grows” says Hussain.
