Recently, there has been a recent surge in reports of circulation of counterfeit currency in Pakistan. Earlier this year, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on seized Rs160 million fake currency notes including foreign currency and arrested three persons during a raid. Moreover, in April, Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) of Islamabad police arrested a man with fake currency notes Rs84,000. Thus it paramount that people learn to identify fake currency to safeguard themselves from such a transfixing scenario. By learning some very basic security features, you can ensure all your banknotes fulfil the conditions shared by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Here’s how you can identify a real currency:
- The security thread on a real note runs only on the Front Left side of the note. It is interrupted when viewed held down, while it will seem complete if viewed held up.
- Flags on 500, 1,000 and 5,000 currency note will change color when viewed at different angles.
- Viewed upheld in light, you will see a hidden visual of Quaid-i-Azam with the currency denomination.
- The Quaid’s sherwani will always leave a trace of roughness no matter how old the note is. Though it does become faint with older notes.
- Printing will never smear on a real note if wet. Rub the surface of a note on a plain paper and see if it leaves a trace of ink on the paper, it is fake.
- Genuine currency notes will note change color when viewed under Black light or UV Light. (tip for checking in bulk)
- Real notes will never split at the edges.
