Hate crime: In his statement, Kashif said the attackers shouted, “Why are you wearing this dress?” “Why are you here?” and “Go back to your country. I hate Muslims.” The assailants also cut a part of Kashif’s beard, saying, “And why do you have this beard?”. Kashif was also stabbed in the arm and has had to receive 14 stitches. Saskatoon’s mayor: Charlie Clark said he was “horrified and saddened” by the attack and “Groups that are spreading white supremacy, Islamophobia and any other form of discrimination need to be investigated and held accountable.”

“We must also confront individual acts of racism and discrimination,” said Clark.

What’s next: A police investigation has been launched into the assault and Kashif has said it’s possible that a third assailant was also present on the scene. He further said he was concerned about the safety of his wife and three children, aged between 3 and 8.
