What happened: Post arrest bail was granted to Khawaja Asif in an inquiry into money laundering and assets beyond means case that was initiated by National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Background: PML-N’s senior leader Khawaja Asif, who was initially arrested in Islamabad on December 29, 2020, and was later shifted to Lahore where he remained under physical remand till January 22, was granted post-arrest bail on Wednesday, June 23. A two-member bench of the Lahore High Court, comprising of Justice Alia Neelum and Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, announced the verdict, ordering Khawaja Asif’s release from the jail upon the submission of Rs 10 million worth bail bond. The senior leadership of PML-N celebrated Khawaja Asif’s bail decision and took Twitter to congratulate him on his release. PML-N President, Shahbaz Sharif tweeted “Khawaja Sahab belongs to our vanguard which is not afraid of prisons or chains. The politics of revenge in the name of accountability has been exposed once again today with the release of Khawaja Asif on bail!”
