What happened: Senior political leaders of Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK) had a meeting with PM Narendra Modi on Thursday. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi termed the meeting as “unsuccessful and pointless” as he believed the event was a public relations exercise that achieved nothing.

Background: On Friday, during a press conference in Islamabad, FM Shah Mehmood Qureshi stated that the episode of the meeting was just an effort for restoring the reputation of PM Narendra Modi and India after the disputed region’s special autonomy was removed. He further said, “In my view, it was a drama and why was it a drama? Because at best it could be called a public relations exercise but nothing was achieved from it.” The foreign minister also stated that “Kashmiris are still in search of their identity. They are demanding their autonomous status and independence. They want security and are not accepting the demographic structuring in IoK.” He also believes that the present condition of IoK is contrary to what the Indian government describes as only ‘destruction’ has arrived in IoK and not ‘development and prosperity.
