Traders threaten to oppose lockdown with violence

Current Lockdown ruling: Punjab is expected to go into a complete lockdown from tomorrow (May 8) until May 16 in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the Eid holidays. The NCOC has said that police, rangers and armed forces personnel will be deployed to major parts of the city to restrict movement as tourist hotspots, public transport, and others will remain closed.

Islamabad lockdown: The DC Islamabad has said that the capital will be going into lockdown a day before Punjab, as the restrictions will start from 6pm this evening. He urged everyone to stay home as all transport coming in and out of the city, Metro bus service, public parks, hiking trails among other things will be sealed till the end of lockdown.

Traders Opposition: The All Pakistan Anjuman Tajiran (APAT) has warned the government of severe clashes between traders and security forces in case of the lockdown. They have stated that the government should learn from the practice of Saudi Arabia, that has allowed trading to go on round the clock. He said that markets open normally with restrictions are better than markets opened for limited time. A spokesperson of the APAT said that businesses should have been allowed to operate round the clock till Eid. They also opposed the week long Eid holidays where markets will be shut and public transport is banned. The issue of workers not being able to reach home for Eid was also raised.
