18-year old Muslim vegetable seller beaten to death by Unnao police

Faisal Hussain, an 18-year-old vegetable seller was allegedly beaten to death by personnel of the Unnao Police. He was the sole breadwinner of the family and had been working as a vegetable seller since he was 12-years old.

What Happened: On Friday, Hussain was picked up by police from his shop at the Sabzi Mandi in Bangarmau area of Unnao district on charges of flouting Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. According to Faisal’s family, police thrashed him and took him to the station, where he was later found dead. A vegetable seller at the Sabzi Mandi also made the same claim. A friend of Hussain, Sartaj, said that he was brutally tortured at the police station. Hussain’s younger brother Sufiyan and Sartaj went to the hospital to retrieve the body after getting the information.

What Next: A murder case has been registered against constables Vijay Choudhary, Seemavat, and home guard Satya Prakash Friday after local residents, along with Faisal’s family members,  blocked the Unnao-Bangarmau-Hardoi Road. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Monday also sent a notice to the Unnao district authorities, demanding a report to be submitted within three days. The Response: The act of police brutality has sparked outrage amongst people.
