Is cycling the future of transport in Milan?

Milan has designed a road scheme to give more space for cycling and walking in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ever since the lockdown in Italy has been imposed, the traffic congestion has reduced by as much as 75 per cent and Italian officials wish to keep it that way. The Strade Aperte Plan This plan was announced on Tuesday and it will include low-cost bike lanes and widened pavements. Cyclist and pedestrian priority streets will also be introduced. Marco Granelli, a deputy mayor of Milan, said: “We worked for years to reduce car use. If everybody drives a car, there is no space for people, there is no space to move, there is no space for commercial activities outside the shops.” Once lockdown restrictions are lifted, 35 kilometres of streets will be transformed over the summer, with a rapid, experimental expansion of cycling and walking space.
