A group of Indian researchers discovered a new species of green pit vipers and named it after Salazar Slytherin.
Why Slytherin? For those who are not familiar with the background, the name derives from the Harry Potter franchise. One of the four founders of Hogwarts school was Salazar Slytherin and the symbol of the Slytherin house is in fact a snake. In their research which was published in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution, the scientists suggested that the species should be called Salazar’s pit viper. This species of snake can be founds across east and southeast Asia. One of the unique characteristics about this particular species of viper is the the orange-reddish stripe found on the side of a male’s head.
