Today the Supreme Court with a three-judge bench will be hearing the case regarding the extension of the tenure of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa.
General Bajwa is set to retire by midnight so this is the last chance for the government to satisfy the Supreme Court on the legality of his extension. The three member Supreme Court bench consists of Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah. The court directed the attorney general to submit the extension notification issued to former army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani and General Raheel Sharif. During the hearing, Justice Khosa said they wanted to ‘see what pension and perks General Kiyani got after retirement’ before adjourning the hearing for 15 minutes. Furthermore, regarding the retirement of army generals Justice Khosa questioned ‘if army generals never retire, then under what rule did Raheel Sharif retire?’. The hearing is still ongoing.
