A religious group held a protest in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district of Charsadda during which they demanded the removal of the Vice-Chancellor of Bacha Khan University due to the fact that he belongs to the Shia sect of Islam.
The protest took place near Farooq Azam Chowk in the city where religious protestors said discriminatory things about the Shia sect. They further explained that if their demands were not met, they would expand their protest even going as far as to protest outside of the university itself. Prior to the protest, the religious group had held a conference during which they decided that Saqlain Naqvi, the Vice-Chancellor of Bacha Khan University should removed from his position and in the event of this demand not being met, they would engage in strong protests. It was reported that police in the region took no action against the protestors during their anti-Shia speeches. An anonymous professor at Bacha Khan University told a news agency that there was a group within the university that wanted the Vice-Chancellor removed from his position and were using the religious group to achieve this goal.
