PM Khan Lauches ‘Digital Pakistan’ Campaign

On Thursday, Prime Minister Imran Khan launched the ‘Digital Pakistan’ campaign which is part of efforts of the PTI government’s digitisation programme to introduce new technologies to pubic welfare.

The PM held the inauguration ceremony for the programme at the Prime Ministers Office in Islamabad. While speaking at the ceremony he called the programme extremely important for the progression of Pakistan’s youth. Referencing Pakistan’s history with technological progress, he mentioned that while the rest of the world had been advancing, Pakistan had been lagging behind. He explained, “Digital Pakistan will be the government’s utmost priority. It will unleash the potential of the youth. Pakistan has the second biggest population of youth and it can be turned into strength through digital work.” He further said, “Women can contribute to this sector as well and gain jobs.” The premier also emphasised the importance of e-commerce and e-governance claiming it has the power to entirely alter the face of an institution and adding he would be applying it uniformly. He said, “I am unfortunately facing a lot of resistance in the face of digitisation, and we are working all out to ensure the process is carried out.” The former cricketer made a reference to his first speech when elected PM where he famously said ‘Ghabrana Nahi Hai’ and said “Many people panicked after that speech, now I am telling you not to panic because we are headed in the right direction.” He further stressed that even international agencies have begun to recognise and appreciate Pakistan’s fiscal and economic policies. The “Digital Pakistan” campaign is being directed by the Ministry of Information Technology whose role is to digitise all correspondence between government offices. The Ministry has been allotted three months to complete this campaign. A few months ago, PTI senior leader Jahangir Tareen revealed that the government had hired a former senior executive from Google to assist with revamping it’s payment system and setting the digitisation initiative into motion.
