Women Activists Rally Against Harassment and Violence in Balochistan’s Capital

Women activists in Quetta staged a rally against violence and harassment being faced by women in the Balochistan province.

On Sunday, a number of activists from Quetta belonging to a rights organisation called Shirkat Gah staged a protest against violence and harassment. They marched on the streets changing slogans and carrying banners and placards with anti-violence statements on them. The march culminated in a demonstration outside the Quetta Press Club. Over here, the protesters began chanting slogans against the factors surrounding violence and harassment against women. Regarding the event, rights activists Hameeda Noor, Qamar-un-Nisa, Behram Baloch and Mir Behram Lehri explained that 16 days of activism were being observed worldwide to raise awareness regarding the rights of women. Shirkat Gah has organised multiple events on this subject including training workshops, painting exhibitions and awareness walks. They also said that a table talk with journalists was organised in the press club to advocate for legislation on women’s rights. The speakers delved into detail about the vital role of women in the development of the nation, saying that society will only have a chance to progress if equal opportunities are granted to women. “The education of girls has suffered because of the recent University of Balochistan harassment scandal,” they deplored.  This year so far in Balochistan, 52 women had been killed in the name of honour and three incidents of acid attacks had been reported, the speakers said.
