The Defence Analyst Lt Gen (retired) Amjad Shoaib branded the ongoing controversy regarding the extension of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa an ’embarrassment for the Pakistan army’.
While speaking to Geo News, the Analyst stated that the army had no role in the process of the extension and it was real work was meant to be done by the bureaucracy. Additionally, he claimed that ministers are not usually involved in such matters and get details from the bureaucrats. He said that ‘those involved in the process should be held accountable’. He further added ‘I can tell you that General Bajwa was not interested in an extension but the government after the Prime Minister’s visit to the US’. The COAS has been involved in the country’s foreign policy and economic affairs. He has also arranged for loans from the Middle East to help with the dire economic state of the nation. When asked about General Bajwa’s response in the Supreme Court, Shoaib said he suspects the COAS will tell the court that this is the responsibility of the government and the civil bureaucracy must be aware of the procedure and the rules and regulations of such matters.
