More than one hundred school buildings were destroyed in the Battagram district, and since then students have been forced to attend classes out in the open According to the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority, construction has been delayed due to the unavailability of funds. The 2005 earthquake resulted in the destruction of 529 school buildings. The Headmaster of one of these buildings told a private news source that classes have been held out in the open unless it was raining, during which they would use the rooms in a nearby mosque. However, many students used the weather as an excuse to miss out on classes. The Government Primary School, Hanjoo, was one such school that never got shelters after the earthquake and had to continue classes in this way.
Javed Iqbal, the APTA general secretary, reprimanded the government over failure to rebuild the schools even 14 years after the earthquake and pointed out that the delay in reconstruction of schools had been affecting children’s education in the district.
