A village in Upper Chitral boycotts dowry terming it “social evil”

What happened: On February 4, ARY News reported that a jirga in Upper Chitral’s Laspur village decided to ban dowry in marriages as they stated that it’s time to end the social evil. According to reports, the elders of the Laspur village concluded that demanding dowry from the bride’s family accounts for unnecessary expenditure. One of the villagers is quoted by ARY News as,  “The parents of girls were always facing distress for the wedding of their daughters due to unneeded traditions and dowry.

Details: Subsequently, the resident, claimed that dowry is a huge financial burden on the family. At the same time, the resident, Sahib Jan, stated,  “Demanding dowry from the bride’s family was an un-Islamic and immoral act.”  However, now the jirga has decided to ban dowry and prohibited the groom’s family from demanding any dowry. 

More: More:  The locals of the Laspur village have also demanded the district administration for implementing the decision made by jirga as Sahib Jan said,  “Whoever violates the jirga’s resolution, we will boycott the family.”  Appreciating the decision, an Instagram user wrote,  “Good decision. Ye dowry ka concept he khatam ho jana chahye pata nahi loug kiun demand karty dowry ki..”
