Abdul Aziz to Resume Sermons at Lal Masjid – Have We Forgotten the Terror His Words Caused?

After 3 years of hiatus, it was announced by the Shuhada Foundation on May 8 that Maulana Abdul Aziz will resume his sermons on Friday. The last time Abdul Aziz addressed the population was in December 2014 after being rendered innocent with regards to more than 30 cases filed against him.

Abdul Aziz stated with confidence that he may no longer be prevented from speaking since his case has been cleared.

Here are some of the reasons why Abdul Aziz was forced to discontinue his sermons. Reasons we must not forget. 1) The ICT administration decided against Aziz back in 2004 after he made a declaration against the army and the operation conducted against the Taliban in Waziristan. To make matters worse, the masses that gained prominence during protests of the December’14 APS attack, ostensibly received death threats from Abdul Aziz. 2) He went so far as to refuse condemnation of the historically brutal, and heinous slaughter of 150 students. Based on this alone, there are no words to rationalize why he is being allowed into the public sphere again. 3) Abdul Aziz managed to radicalize the mosque and turn it into the center of all things political. As a result it was also affirmed as an unidentified body in 2017. All activities rooting from radically devout agendas were forbidden. This was to maintain the sanctity of the foundation as a prayer area. However, the Shuhada Foundation with their decision has managed to thwart this attempt made by the ICT administration. 4) Abdul Aziz was earlier been under intense scrutiny following his mediocre attempt to flee the mosque, veiled in a burqa back in 2007. The scrutiny rooted from his undeniable support for Islamic militant and extremist groups. Why must he face relaxed policies now? 6) Aziz was also the cause of distress among the locals in 2007. Aziz’s students responded to his call for taking action against ‘immoral activities’ in the capital. He declared drugs, music, movies, and photographs of women as moral evils. Resorting to extreme measures, his students kidnapped people, carried out acts of vandalism and arson in a time that spread terror through Islamabad. 7) An operation was conducted to offer protection especially to the local Chinese citizens who continued to disappear. Their kidnappings, Aziz claimed was due to their activities within the area that allegedly included running a bordello. As a result, more than 100 people ended up losing their lives in the firing exchange between armed forces and Aziz’s students. Several cases have been filed against Aziz after the operation. The return of this highly perilous and negatively persuasive religious extremist is rather alarming. His connections to various global violent and terrorist attacks have been documented over the years. His view, approach and ideologies are a threat to all at an international scale.

Thus, his return to the Red Mosque is quite alarming, to say the least.
